On Sunday the 5th of September Woodside Cemetery and Crematorium will join Renfrewshire Doors Open Day 2021.
Perhaps one of the more unusual venues to visit, Woodside Crematorium will offer visitors access to the operational areas of the crematorium, a guided walk around the Heritage Trail, and the chance to view the newly refurbished Martyr’s Chapel.
Built in 1938, Woodside Crematorium is well known to many Renfrewshire families and Doors Open Day visitors will have the rare opportunity of a short, guided tour of the operational areas within the crematorium itself and learn more about the usually unseen parts of the listed building.
Where: Please meet at the Waiting Room opposite the crematorium entrance.
Time: Open between 12.30 and 3pm.
Booking: Not required
Age limit: The tour is suitable for those aged 16+
Accessibility: There are stairs within the operational areas of the crematorium, so it is not accessible for all. The public areas are fully accessible.
The open day also includes a guided walk along the beautiful tree lined pathways of the Heritage Trail which dates back to 1845. Queen’s Sculptor Sandy Stoddart will guide the walk, sharing the history of those whose graves lie within the cemetery grounds, dating back to 1845.
We are offering two guided tours of the Heritage Trail. Please arrive promptly and note that suitable outdoor footwear is essential for the old grassy pathways.
Where: Please meet at the First Aid post at Memorial Cairn (staff will direct you)
Time: 1pm or 2.30pm – the tour takes approximately 45 minutes.
Age limit: All welcome
Accessibility: The tour walks along the old grassy pathways and is unfortunately not accessible for those with mobility needs.
To complete the Doors Open Day experience visitors are invited to look around the newly refurbished Martyr’s Chapel.
Situated at the entrance to the cemetery grounds it has been significantly upgraded and is now a modern funeral service venue. Complimentary tea, coffee, juice and biscuits will be served in Martyr’s Chapel between 12.30 and 3.30pm, all welcome.
